roadrunner

Did you know....
the roadrunner is in the cuckoo family.
they can run at speeds of 20 mph.
they are monogamous and mate for life.

A young neighbor told me it's good luck to see one cross the road.

Best of all, the roadrunners come into the yard and eat the grasshoppers. Then they fly into the trees to pull the wings off said grasshoppers, groom themselves, and taunt the dogs.
We've even taken to calling them roof runners because they fly onto the roof to strut back and forth while the dogs bark themselves into a frenzy. It makes for interesting afternoons.

    1. They are a strange bird. It's almost like having predatory chickens fly into the yard!

    1. When the roadrunners are agitated, they make the strangest kind of rattling call. Of course, it only fuels the dogs. It can be a zoo out there!

  6. They do seem like a good bird to have around, especially since they catch their own dinner, unlike some of our local birds nagging for peanuts (Blue Jays).

    1. I have a little bit of an issue with the roadrunners eating lizards too. Other than that, they DO keep the grasshopper population down. :)

    1. They are pretty unusual birds alright. This one was waiting out the dog frenzy in our tree. And they do look like cartoon characters when they run!
