Inspired by Chrisy, at living a good north coast life, I decided to choose a word to go forward with into 2014. But I have questions. I have doubts and fears.

Do I have the inner strength to make the best of what I have while moving toward my goals?
To see beyond the present and trust in my own strengths?
To trust in the universe?
To be patient?

Is there a balance to be found between the mountains, the mesas, the storms and sunsets, and the return to the big city? Is there balance between the silence, the solitude, the contemplation of nature and the traffic, noise and pollution of that big city? Is the balance within myself, the ability to exist in both worlds?
It isn't easy.

In the end, the word chose me, and that word is Balance.

My goal for 2014....balance.

What are your goals, your resolutions?

this landscape

The snow is long gone....even the promise or hope of snow has disappeared into the sunny, dry days of this desert. The morning temperature rises above freezing quickly, and the dogs run on the mesa. They chase rabbits while I crawl on the ground and contort my body into strange and unknown yoga-like poses in an attempt to get the best possible macro shot of that particularly special weed. I kneel in the stickers of a cactus, absorbed with the pattern of the spines, the color of the cactus flesh, the decaying wood of a cholla. I take the photo, pull the stickers out of my jeans and continue on my way.
The dogs have yet to catch a rabbit, the rabbits are far too clever for my barking and bounding team of hunters. I don't think they really care if they catch a rabbit or not, they're just happy to run.
The sun, low on the horizon, becomes brighter, even in winter. The air becomes warmer.
My early morning light is changing. I've captured today's photos, the dogs have run free.
This is the landscape of my mornings.

happy holidays from the west mesa

A quiet morning. No wind. Nothing but nature all around me.
Wandering the west mesa, thinking....that at this moment, on this hill, I found what I was looking for. Hope your holidays are the same.
Wishing you peaceful days.

mesa morning captures

 Thermos joins in the fun.

Another cold and windy day on the mesa, but all this wonderfully raw nature is oh-so-good for the soul.

crockpot chicken with stewed tomatoes and herbs

The husband is working crazy long shifts and we haven't been out hiking. I'm bored. When I'm bored, I cook. Or clean. But today I felt like cooking.

6 boneless, skinless chicken breasts or thighs
2 15 oz cans of stewed tomatoes
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 teaspoon dried thyme
1 teaspoon dried parsley
1/2 teaspoon sea salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper

The chicken goes in the crockpot first. Then the stewed tomatoes, garlic, and spices go on top of the chicken. Cook on low 6 hours.
Serve with rice. (I use brown rice.)
There's a lot of tomato-y liquid leftover....I put it in a saucepan, add a little flour, and make a thick sauce out of it. We pour that over the rice.

Oh, the most important part....brownies for dessert!

into the wind

It wasn't a day for a leisurely walk on the mesa. It was a day for running down the dirt roads, screaming crazy things into the wind, and feeling the raw power of nature.

It was one of those wild, windy days New Mexico is famous for.
Sometimes the wind was so strong I could not hold the camera steady. The air was so cold my fingers couldn't find the buttons on the camera, and it was with stubborn determination alone I overcame the cold and continued to shoot. But I found treasures on the mesa, that day in the roaring wind.

Petrified wood.
Dogs running free.
And a good-looking guy in a white Toyota.

the snow, the camera, and me

Peaceful, cold, and quiet. I wander, camera in hand.
I become lost in a world of contradiction.
Sunny days and weekly snow squalls.
Unforgiving land and soft beauty.
Snowflakes and desert plants.
Frozen fingers, warm soul.

yes, it snowed!

New boots! They arrived the day before the snow arrived.
 Thermos loves the camera.
Yes, it snowed. And then it snowed some more. It's getting to be a regular winter wonderland down here in the desert. Everyone who wished me snowy days, (you wonderful souls), thank you!  xoxo

"the wonderful world of weeds" or "I love the macro lens"

A little early morning wandering with the dogs, the camera, and the wild, (mostly dead),plants on the mesa.
