one mountain, many sides

At times cool and cheerful, fields of flowers and fast streams. At other times, dark and mysterious, almost medieval. It draws me further, along ancient trails and up wooded paths. I don't know what I expect or dare to find, here in the deep, dark woods, but I keep going. Who knows what's around the next bend? That's the beauty, the danger, and the irresistible pull of this life.

more from the mountain

A few more photos from the very green and oh so mystical Unicorn Mountain. I can't get enough of this place, the trees, the cool air, the peace and quiet. The mountain is my island in the sky, a refuge from the summer heat. There are secrets on the mountain, stories I hope to hear as I spend more time and get to know its seasons.

the gift of rain

After three long years of drought, it rains in the desert. Drought changes the way we do things. I had given up on vegetable gardening last year because of the drought. My current backyard project is maintaining the grass for the dogs, so they have someplace cool and somewhat green to hang out. Besides, one of the dogs, who will remain unnamed, liked to dig holes in the garden.
Has the drought come to an end? Probably not. But today, we celebrate the rain. The back yard sings. The rain falls. I wander out to photograph this strange phenomenon in the desert.

Rez dog. Best girlfriend. Smart. Sweet. Loyal. Brave.
Love this dog!

The spirits walk here. I walk here too, wandering on the slickrock, dreaming, remembering, taking pictures. I tell the spirits this is right where I need to be, and they tell me to wait. Be patient. I left this place once before and I came back, older, wiser. I realize I never did actually let go, as this place had never let go of me. I am back, but am I ready to return? The journey is so long. I keep moving forward.

A seemingly warm and sunny morning ahead, we take the high trail. It appears to be the road less traveled, and we are the only people for miles, possibly some of the only souls on Unicorn Mountain this particular morning.
We walk, we talk, the dogs hunt.
Then the rain comes, cold and hard. The road fills with water. The rescuer, also known as the husband, posts the dogs and I near a cluster of pinyon trees, (to shelter us from the wind-driven hail), and runs the quarter-mile distance to the truck. He races back to retrieve his family and it's down to drier country for the day.

Unicorn Mountain kicks our cold, wet butts.

lazy afternoons

Lazy afternoons on the mountain, escaping the 100 degree heat below. Wildflowers, meadows, happy dogs. (Well, at least one happy dog. The other one is still searching for unicorns.)

unicorn mountain

So unlike the mesa we love, but so welcoming in the recent heat wave, Unicorn Mountain beckons us. Tall trees, green meadows, cool streams. The dogs wander in the meadow. I wander too, in awe of the beauty that surrounds me. Deer peer from the forest, curious, watching. Will we see the elusive unicorns? Maybe, but not today.

the bus

High on the mesa, back in the pinyon and juniper forest, there's an old bus. It's been there for a long time. I come to the bus to look, to take pictures, and to think.  I wonder about the dreams that brought those wanderers to our mesa. I wonder how they spent their days, and if they watched the stars at night.
Was their fate foretold in the cards? Spades and hearts. A fair-haired woman, a young friend. Obstacles and setbacks. Misfortune.
I wonder where those wanderers went, their left-behind dreams slowly reclaimed by the earth.

on the mesa

We hike our favorite mesa, in search of arrowheads and solitude. Adventures abound, rabbits run, spirits walk with us. It's a good day. The dogs are tired, arrowheads are admired, and the need for solitude is satisfied. We celebrate with a bottle of wine.
